Lapid Criticizes Israeli Attacks on Syria
He directed sharp criticism at Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration and reiterated demands for early elections.
During a conversation with Israeli Army Radio, Lapid claimed the attack “was in the wrong place,” indicating that Israel might be operating in the region without a unified or thoughtful strategy.
“It seemed as if we were drunk on power. Now we strike anywhere in the Middle East without a clear policy,” he remarked, referencing the recent Israeli air assault that targeted Syrian military sites and infrastructure in Damascus.
The Israeli government justified the action by asserting it was meant to defend Druze populations in the area.
Lapid also stressed the urgency of holding elections ahead of schedule. “Everyone says that once we return from recess, we’ll head straight to elections. We must go to elections to save ourselves from this terrible government,” he insisted.
Israel’s legislative body, the Knesset, is set to go on break starting July 27, with the recess lasting until October. During this period, parliamentary activity is paused.
While the current administration’s tenure is scheduled to conclude next year, snap elections could be held earlier if a Knesset majority endorses the move or if Netanyahu consents to dissolve the legislature.
