Israeli opposition leader denounces government over Syrian attacks

(MENAFN) Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid on Monday criticized the government’s recent military strike on Syria, calling it “unnecessary and hasty,” and renewed his demand for early elections amid growing political tension.

Speaking to Israeli Army Radio, Lapid said the strike, which targeted Syrian military sites in Damascus, lacked strategic clarity and was part of a broader pattern of erratic decision-making. “It seemed as if we were drunk on power. Now we strike anywhere in the Middle East without a clear policy,” he said, accusing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration of acting recklessly.

The Israeli government claimed the airstrike was intended to defend Druze communities, but Lapid argued the action was misguided and highlighted what he sees as a failure to form a coherent regional strategy.

With the Knesset’s summer recess set to begin on July 27 and last through October, Lapid stressed the urgency of change. “Everyone says that once we return from recess, we’ll head straight to elections. We must go to elections to save ourselves from this terrible government,” he stated.

Although Netanyahu’s current term is scheduled to end next year, early elections could be held if the Knesset votes to dissolve itself or if the prime minister agrees to call for new polls. A recent attempt by the opposition to push such a motion failed to gain the required support. Netanyahu has consistently dismissed calls for early elections, citing the ongoing war in Gaza as a reason to maintain political continuity.
