Anti-Government Protest Sparks Arrests in Albania
The Tirana Police Directorate confirmed the arrests stem from multiple criminal allegations, including officer assault, intentional grievous bodily harm, public disturbance, violations involving explosive substances, arson-related property destruction, and obstruction of government officials.
Legal proceedings have additionally been launched against multiple Democratic Party officials and members, authorities disclosed.
The demonstration originated outside the Prime Minister's headquarters before advancing toward the parliamentary complex. Security forces reported sustained bombardment with incendiary devices, fireworks, and projectiles targeting both officers and government facilities.
"As a result of attacks with hard objects, pyrotechnic devices, and Molotov cocktails against the police and state institutions, 16 police officers were injured. They received medical assistance at a hospital and are not in life-threatening condition," officials stated, noting the recovery of 22 undetonated Molotov cocktails.
Interior Minister Albana Kociu condemned the violence, declaring: "The right to protest was once again abused by a group that chose force instead of words, attacking, committing violence, and injuring members of the state police."
Opposition Rally Turns Violent
Tuesday's demonstration, mobilized by opposition factions including the Democratic Party, deteriorated into chaos as participants deployed firebombs, flammable materials, smoke grenades, and miscellaneous projectiles.
Authorities deployed tear gas and water cannons to disperse crowds near the parliament building, causing injuries among multiple demonstrators, media outlets reported.
Opposition movements have orchestrated recurring anti-government protests throughout recent months across Albania, vowing to sustain their campaign.
